Jorge Lorenzo ha vuelto con fuerza de las vacaciones veraniegas y ha conseguido marcar el mejor crono (1.33.654) del primer entrenamiento libre del Gran Premio de Indianápolis de MotoGP, seguido a sólo 0.093 segundos de Marc Márquez, que ha sido segundo. Andrea Dovizioso, que en su tercera salida a pista ha montado la goma extrablanda, ha logrado el tercer mejor crono a 0.217 de Lorenzo, acabando por delante de Dani Pedrosa y Valentino Rossi, el italiano a 0.720 de su compañero de equipo.
Con la pista ligeramente modificada, Lorenzo se ha mostrado rápido desde el principio, situándose al frente de la tabla de tiempos mientras Marc tenía problemas de consistencia en su primera salida a pista, no logrando rebajar los cronos y rodando en treinta y sietes. En su segunda salida a pista, el de Honda ya ha logrado ajustar la moto a su gusto y ha bajado sus cronos, acechando a Lorenzo y Pedrosa, que también ha llegado a liderar los tiempos. Ya en la parte final del entrenamiento, Lorenzo ha marcado un crono de 1.33.871, logrando Dovi con la extrablando igualar a la milésima ese crono, un tiempo que ya en la recta final ha logrado superar Marc con un ya rápido 1.33.747 que parecía iba a permitirle cerrar la FP1 al frente de la hoja de tiempos.
Pero en su último run, Lorenzo ha vuelto a bajar sus tiempos y a sólo 1,5 minutos del final de la sesión ha mejorado ese crono para certificar el 1.33.654 que ha quedado como referencia. Un tiempo, sin embargo muy lejano al de la pole del pasado año, lograda por Marc con 1.31.619, y por encima también del récord de carreras, del propio Márquez en 2014 (1.32.831). Los motivos pueden ser varios, que la pista está sucia todavía, que la lluvia de ayer le haya hecho perder grip o, incluso, que la modificación del trazado en la entrada a meta ralentice la vuelta de los pilotos. Es pronto aún para sacar conclusiones al respecto, habrá que esperar a mañana al mediodía para tener más información.
El que ha sufrido mucho hoy ha sido Aleix Espargaró, que no ha encontrado la forma de ir rápido con su Suzuki, sólo al final y con goma extrablando ha logado mejorar para terminar 12ª a más de 1,3 segundos del primero.
Stefan Bradl, que después de perderse Alemania por lesión, volvía al mundial debutando con su nuevo equipo, el Aprilia Gresini, ha pagado la novedad acabando penúltimo a casi 3 segundos de la cabeza.
